Description
This rare 19th-century antique checkers set is housed in a wooden box with a warm, aged patina and includes original period checkers pieces. The set once belonged to Harold Arthur Furlong (1895–1987), a highly decorated American soldier and recipient of the Medal of Honor for his remarkable valor during World War I. | | | | | Furlong earned the nation's highest military decoration for single-handedly advancing under intense machine-gun fire in the Bois-de-Bantheville, eliminating four enemy nests, and capturing 20 German prisoners. His gallantry also earned him France's Croix de Guerre with palms and the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. | | | | | Beyond World War I, Furlong served with distinction in the Michigan National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1946. During World War II, he served again as an Army surgeon in Germany. | | | | | A fine example of 19th-century game craftsmanship, this checkers set is also a poignant historical artifact that reflects the personal life of a celebrated American war hero. | | This item measures approximately 5.5" L and is in good condition.
