Description
This is a hand-colored etching by Austrian artist Herta Czoernig‑Gobanz (1886–1970) titled “Alserkirche,” from her Musicians Home Series. It depicts the Trinitarian Church on Alser Street (popularly known as Alserkirche), where Ludwig van Beethoven’s funeral service was held on March 29, 1827, before his body was transferred to the Währing cemetery. It includes a musical vignette from the “Marcia Funebre,” the second movement of his Symphony No. 3 in E♭ major, Op. 55 (“Eroica”). It was produced after Czoernig‑Gobanz studied etching under Professor Ludwig Michalek in Vienna and Weimar. It reflects her topographical style, capturing historic Viennese sites and composer homes. It is signed in pencil lower right “H. Czoernig.” It measures approximately 13.25″ L × 16.25″ H and is in brand new condition.
