Description

This is a framed art print of Shiratsuyu of the Teahouse Wakana-ya by Chokosai Eisho, created in the 1790s. Eisho was a pupil of Chobunsai Eishi, known for Ukiyo-e portraits of beauties. This artwork depicts Shiratsuyu, a popular courtesan, holding a "Kingyodama" (glass fishbowl). Courtesans were trendsetters and fashion leaders of their time. The glass fishbowl and Persian rabbit pattern in the background were fashionable in Edo during that period. This Ukiyo-e reflects its role as both art and a medium for trends, similar to magazines or newspapers. It measures approximately 20" in height and is in good condition.
