Description

This is a framed miniature fabric kimono, a reproduction of the Uchikake kimono from the late 18th to mid-19th century (Edo period), formerly owned by the Mitsui family. The Mitsui family, renowned wealthy merchants of the Edo period, created textiles that exemplified the pinnacle of craftsmanship at the time. This piece replicates the "Uchikake with Mountain Cherry Blossoms and Mandarin Ducks on a Red Background," which portrays a vibrant spring scene. It features mandarin ducks playing in flowing water depicted in tie-dye, with mountain cherry blossoms blooming above, all set against a rich red background. The scene also incorporates gold-thread embroidery of the characters "sun," "spring," and "elevation," referencing a poem from the Kokinshu by Bonkawa Munehisa: "Even when I don't think of spring today, the shadows of the flowers that stand out so easily are." This framed textile measures approximately 15" H and is in good condition.
